What You MUST Know About Miss America Rules Before Competing

The Miss America Organization is famous for its strict titleholder requirements—but even veterans can find them confusing! Here's Pageant Planet’s easy‐to‐digest breakdown of the most important updates for 2025:

🧭 Section 1 – Your Year of Service

  • Applies to local, state, and national titleholders.

  • Titleholders must make all scheduled appearances, travel on request, and follow official Miss America procedures.


👀 Section 2 – Eligibility Updates

Age Requirements

  • Miss: Must be 18–28 years old by the date of your state competition.

  • Miss Teen: Now 14–18 years old.

Gender Eligibility

  • Contestants must be female—either born female or have completed gender-affirming surgery (vaginoplasty) with medical documentation.

Residency & Citizenship

  • Must live, work, or study in the state you’re competing in.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, with proof such as a birth certificate or passport .

Education & Personal Status

  • Miss Teens must be full-time students.

  • Miss: must be a high school senior or have a GED or college admission.

  • Must be unmarried, never married, and not a parent.

  • Must have no convictions for serious crimes 


🎯 Section 3 – Contestant Commitments

  • You must participate in all competition events, including TV/radio interviews, photo/video shoots, rehearsals, and appearances.

  • MAO owns rights to all media (photos, video, audio) and can use them for promo or advertising .

  • The first runner-up must be prepared to take the crown at any time .


💰 Section 4 – Fundraising Requirements

  • Miss Teens: Raise $100 (local) and $250 (state) for Children’s Miracle Network.

  • Miss: Raise $500 at the state level to qualify for Nationals .


⛔ Section 5 – Other Restrictions

  • Titleholders cannot compete in other pageants during their reign—doing so means losing the crown.

  • No engagements or marriage during your title year without written MAO permission.

  • Any misrepresentation or failure to fulfill duties (including pregnancy or legal issues) can lead to title forfeiture .


🆕 New in 2025:

  1. Miss ages extended to 28—giving more women the opportunity to compete .

  2. Stringent transgender policy—contestants must have completed vaginoplasty with certification to compete.

  3. Fresh talent format—now permitted: ballroom dance or cheer routines using "human props", with partners dressed in black and no solo segments en.wikipedia.org.
